Northampton schedules sign-ordinance hearing for September 24th

City Council Committee on Legislative Matters · Meeting of August 10, 2026

NORTHAMPTON — Committee on Legislative Matters schedules public hearing on sign ordinance constitutional revisions. The Northampton City Council Committee on Legislative Matters scheduled a joint public hearing with the Planning Board on September 24th to discuss revisions to Chapter 350-7 Signs. City Solicitor Alan Seewald said the changes address Supreme Court rulings that ordinances cannot regulate signs based on content; the city's current rules limiting when political signs display are unconstitutional.

Director of Planning and Sustainability Carolyn Misch outlined three main changes: eliminating unconstitutional language, reorganizing the text, and redefining ground-sign categories to unlimited Type I and restricted Type II.
