City Council Committee advances parking ordinances with bus stop improvements

City Council Committee on Legislative Matters · Meeting of June 29, 2026

NORTHAMPTON — Legislative panel advances parking improvements and bus stop standardization. The City Council Committee on Legislative Matters voted unanimously to recommend four ordinances: eliminating a Parsons Street parking space to improve access to Bridge Street cemetery (26.070), restricting Vernon Street parking after a successful trial period to address winter safety concerns near Route 9 (26.071), and advancing three related Elm Street ordinances (26.083-26.085) that extend no-parking zones and update the city's bus stop schedule. Community Development Planner Keith Benoit noted that the updated bus stop ordinance corrects a drafting error from the prior year when an incomplete version was mistakenly codified.

The improvements include a new raised accessible bus stop on Elm Street flush with the sidewalk to enable safe boarding.
