Disability Commission rejects hotel rear-lift accessibility variance
Disability Commission · Meeting of July 14, 2026
Northampton Disability Commission unanimously rejects hotel accessibility variance. The commission voted 5-0 against the Sojourn Hotel's request to use a rear wheelchair lift instead of an accessible main entrance for the 3 Elm Street conversion, with commissioners arguing the lift denies equal access. Commissioners approved two other project variances: repositioning shower controls closer to a seat and allowing non-uniform back stairway treads.
The commission also heard a presentation on eleven Picture Main Street variances, deferring a formal vote until September, and approved Karl Krueger as a new member for his ADA expertise.
