Disability Commission tables Sojourn Hotel accessibility variance decision
Disability Commission · Meeting of May 19, 2026
Northampton Disability Commission tables decision on Sojourn Hotel accessibility variance pending further review. Sunwood Builders presented a variance request for the 3 Elm Street project, which triggered an unanticipated ADA elevator requirement when renovation exceeded 30 percent. The project would cost $1.2 million to add an elevator and reduce rooms by 23.5 percent, compared with $350,000 to $450,000 for the proposed exterior chairlift.
The Commission approved prior meeting minutes with four affirmative votes and two abstentions, agreeing to review additional materials and vote at the next meeting. Commissioners also advanced Disability Pride Month library story hours with American Sign Language interpreter support and outlined accessible trail projects at Boggy Meadow and Pine Grove.
