NORTHAMPTON — The Northampton School Committee voted 7-1 to recommend the City Council adopt a 1987 charter provision letting councilors raise, not just cut, the schools budget. Member Anat Weisenfreund moved the measure, capping any council increase at the level of the committee's own "strong budget." Member Robbie Saner Sullivan cast the lone dissent, calling the timing "heavy-handed and not in good faith," while Member Michael Stein argued the current charter leaves "one person" with unilateral budget power. The committee separately voted 7-1, with Stein dissenting, to accept a $6,239.76 donation of 12 air conditioning units from JFK School's Parent-Teacher Organization.
The meeting ended early, 6-1, after the chair repeatedly ruled Stein out of order during a dispute over delayed special-meeting scheduling.
