School Panel OKs New Title, Renames Afterschool Program

School Committee · Meeting of July 29, 2026

NORTHAMPTON — The Northampton School Committee approved a retitled director post and renamed its after-school program at a special meeting. Members voted 7-1, with one abstention from Anat Weisenfreund and a no from Renika Montgomery-Tamakloe, to approve a new job description renaming the director of curriculum and instruction as director of teaching and learning, adding a principal-experience requirement. New Superintendent Anna Maria Azarloza said she hopes to hire by September.

The committee voted 9-0 to rename its after-school program from Ignite to Nest. Discussion of an August retreat turned tense: Weisenfreund said "a unilateral decision" on a past facilitator "caused additional fracture to the committee," while Montgomery-Tamakloe warned that six hours on a Saturday demands addressing leftover committee business. The committee closed by voting to enter executive session over collective bargaining matters, including Unit C, G and E memoranda of agreement and MIAA issues, and did not return to open session.
