Committee rewrites subcommittee agenda rule
Northampton School Committee voted to rewrite subcommittee agenda rules and add a second monthly meeting.
School Committee · Meeting of September 10, 2026
Northampton School Committee voted to rewrite subcommittee agenda rules and add a second monthly meeting. After two failed attempts, members passed a Member Amy Martyn-authored rule change 6-2-1, limiting subcommittee chairs to agendas referred by the full board or "agreed upon" with administration, over objections from Member Michael Stein that it would "disempower" chairs. Separately, the board voted 5-2-2 to move to two meetings a month.
Superintendent Anna Maria Azarloza told members Northampton was classified as "requiring assistance or intervention" after assessment participation fell below 95 percent for several subgroups, including students with disabilities, Asian students, and Black and African students, even as the district's overall progress landed in the "moderate" category. The board also heard that four to five million dollars across roughly 20 grants remain untracked against the district's roughly $52 million operating budget, and closed the night by voting 8-1 to enter executive session over a pending lawsuit, Jane Doe v. City of Northampton.
