Northampton Soccer Club's travel teams began practices in mid-August ahead of a Sept. 12 season opener, and the club has adopted stricter referee-conduct rules for the fall.

NORTHAMPTON -- Youth soccer activity picked up around town this week as fall programs geared up, while the town's recreation department flagged a state watering restriction affecting local facilities.

TOWN -- The Parks and Recreation Department's website carries an active alert for a "Mandatory State Regulated Watering Ban." The department's program lineup for the period includes Fall Youth Soccer, Unity Basketball for the fall, and Fall Adult Softball Leagues, alongside continuing efforts on the "Maines Field Resiliency Study," described on the site as "Shaping the Future of Maines Field." A Touch A Truck event is also listed among the department's upcoming offerings.

YOUTH LEAGUES -- Northampton Soccer Club says its Travel Soccer games "begin Sept 12," with practices "beginning in Mid-August" and Pre-Travel sessions for younger players set to run Saturdays on dates still to be determined. The club is also emphasizing sportsmanship this season under a program it calls "Respect the Call," citing new U.S. Soccer penalties for misconduct toward officials and a new Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association pregame routine that includes a sportsmanship statement read by the home team and a pre-game handshake. The club said the pre-game handshake was added "since multiple instances of misconduct have been reported during post-game handshakes," while encouraging teams to still shake hands after games at coaches' discretion. Fields for the club's programs are generally at Florence Fields, with some U11-U14 teams practicing at JFK Middle School.

The club noted that field closures due to weather will be communicated by coaches and posted on the Parks and Recreation cancellations page.
