Northampton Soccer Club rolls out new referee-respect rules ahead of its Fall 2026 season.

Northampton Soccer Club's travel teams will open their Fall 2026 season with games beginning Sept. 12, with practices starting in mid-August, according to the club's website. Registration for the fall season ran May 15-31. Pre-travel sessions for players ages 4-7 will be held on Saturdays this fall, with specific dates still to be determined. Most practices and home games will take place at Florence Fields, with some U11-U14 teams practicing at JFK Middle School.

The club also announced new pregame procedures for the coming season, citing what it described as a national "uptick in misconduct" toward game officials. According to the club, U.S. Soccer has significantly increased minimum penalties for misconduct toward minor referees and created a new "Gross Misconduct" category covering "insulting, belittling, insinuating or taunting behavior which undermines the authority of the referee." The Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association has instituted a new pregame routine requiring players, coaches and referees to line up five yards from the spectator sideline, a home-team representative to read a sportsmanship statement, and a pregame handshake between teams.

"We expect all Northampton coaches, players, and parents to set an exceptionally high standard for the rest of the league when it comes to our treatment of referees and opponents," the club said in the announcement. NSC said it also encourages postgame handshakes, though it is leaving that decision to individual coaches "if they feel the need to protect their players."
