Northampton Panel Advances Immigrant Protection Policy
School Board · Meeting of September 16, 2026
Northampton's Rules and Policy Subcommittee unanimously advanced a revised state-mandated immigrant protection policy toward a full School Committee vote. Chaired by Weisenfreund, with members Reese and Jewel, the panel directed Superintendent Ezra Loza to clarify language in the DESE model policy issued after Gov. Maura Healey signed the PROTECT Act on August 5, a law Northampton is already past its September 1 compliance deadline to implement.
Members voted 3-0 to send the edited policy forward and 3-0 to have Loza work with the NACE Immigrant Solidarity Committee on accompanying procedures. "I was proposing to remove the procedures because... that's very atypical to have procedures as part of a policy," Loza said of a separate field trip policy overhaul also underway. The panel also flagged a written cell phone policy, a teen dating violence policy and a community-driven AI policy as coming priorities, and set its next meeting for October 28.
