NORTHAMPTON — The Northampton City Council voted 9-0 to approve a community safety and immigration enforcement resolution after about two hours of public comment on ICE activity. City Council President Rachel Mayore presided, as residents including Carmen Juneau and Jane Myers pushed for stronger language. Councilor Loiselle acknowledged the resolution "doesn't have teeth," while Councilor Stratton called ICE enforcement "pure theater." Separately, the council voted 7-2, with Robbins and Stratton dissenting, to reprogram $160,000 for roof design work at the JFK school, and unanimously approved $313,489 for HVAC upgrades at JFK and Jackson Street School.
State Rep. Lindsay Sabadosa also briefed councilors on the roughly $63 billion fiscal 2027 state budget, including $1.73 billion for education funding.
