Council Shifts $131,020 to Cover School Roof Costs
Northampton council moved school and audit money while opening a data center zoning debate.
Select Board · Meeting of August 20, 2026
Northampton council moved school and audit money while opening a data center zoning debate. Councilors voted 9-0 to shift $131,020 in city funds, $75,250 from other school projects and $55,770 from capital stabilization, to cover a design-cost shortfall on a school roof pursued through the Massachusetts School Building Authority. A separate 8-1 vote awarded Scanlon and Associates a three-year, fiscal 2027-2029 city auditing contract, with Councilor Stratton dissenting.
No vote was taken on data centers, but resident Mark Jarvis told the council he has already gathered the voter signatures required to force a zoning vote banning new commercial data centers, warning of "extraordinary demands for electricity and utility infrastructure." Councilor Robbins and Councilor Nabod both pushed for a quick interim moratorium, while Councilor Perry cautioned against creating a new joint committee, saying "I really caution us of creating work that will hinder us moving forward."
