NORTHAMPTON — Smith Vocational trustees tabled a contested sick leave bank policy overhaul after public testimony against it. Michael Patterson, the school's director of economics and an 18-year sick-bank donor, warned the proposed annual cap "is unfair" and would create new costs for the district. Superintendent-Director Julie Lincoln-Hoker said the policy subcommittee's draft is paused while she consults district counsel; no new vote date was set.
Trustees separately approved, 5-0, the district's 2026-2029 school improvement plan, faculty manual updates adding weekly student self-reflection journals, and a $600 superintendent's award. Administrators reported 45 fewer freshman applications this year but said the school already filled its 150-seat class, ahead of last year's pace, and will move its admissions lottery up to around April 1.
