NORTHAMPTON — A Northampton city councilor's informal leaf blower survey sparked an extended commission debate over noise versus air pollution. City Councilor Gwen presented results from 79 respondents, finding 65.8 percent cited both noise and air pollution as their biggest complaint and 35.4 percent favored an outright ban. Member Louis Hasbrook pointed to state regulation 310 CMR 7.10, noting "the state says basically, no, volume doesn't count," while member Katie Deppin cited Arlington's switch to electric Greenworks equipment, pegging an electric backpack blower at $1,500 versus roughly $500 for a comparable gas model.
No vote or policy was proposed. The commission also discussed restructuring its Pollinator Subcommittee and heard updates on a high school geothermal project, a Ryan Road School solar project, and a grant-funded hot water heater retrofit at Smith Vocational Agricultural High School. The meeting closed with an 8-0 roll-call vote to adjourn.
