NORTHAMPTON — Smith Vocational trustees voted against joining school choice and shelved a regionalization study. The board voted 4-1, with only Mayor Sierra in favor, to decline participation in the state's 2026-27 school choice program. Consultant Jay Barry of the Massachusetts Association of Regional Schools told trustees "the sense seemed to be that a regionalization study was not a path forward," after sending towns showed little interest and state officials ruled regional buildings must sit inside a regional district.
Trustees instead plan to pursue a Massachusetts School Building Authority statement of interest for the school's roughly $50 million Building D replacement, with Superintendent Lincoln Hooker citing a CTE expansion grant as the most viable way to trim about $5 million from that cost. Trustees also unanimously approved an October FFA livestock trip to Pennsylvania and added an Aug. 18, 2026, board retreat.
