Zoning Board approves deck additions at two nonconforming properties

Zoning Board of Appeals · Meeting of June 25, 2026

Northampton approves two deck additions at nonconforming homes in single June hearing. The Zoning Board of Appeals unanimously approved special permits for Elaine Kersten to add a nine-foot-high deck at 73 Warner St in Florence and for David Murphy to add an 8-by-8-foot expansion to his existing second-story deck at 31 Elizabeth St. David Bloomberg, Chair, and voting members Elizabeth Silver, Vice Chair, and Maureen Scanlon determined both additions would not be substantially more detrimental to neighborhood conditions than existing nonconforming aspects of each property.

Both approvals cited neighborhoods predating current zoning ordinances and either screening or aging-in-place safety benefits of the proposed work.
