School Committee votes to recommend Chapter 329 adoption

NORTHAMPTON — School Committee urges City Council to increase school funding authority. The Northampton School Committee voted 7-1 to recommend that the City Council adopt Chapter 329 of the Acts of 1987, which would allow the Council to increase school budgets with a two-thirds majority vote. Member Michael Stein supported this measure, criticizing the Mayor's existing unilateral authority; Member Robbie Saner Sullivan cast the sole dissent.
The Committee also accepted a $6,239.76 donation from the JFK Parent Teacher Organization for 12 air conditioning units in a separate 7-1 vote, with Stein opposing again, citing concerns that PTOs should not fund basic infrastructure.
