School Committee Holds Public Hearing on FY27 Budget; Members Demand Clarification on Staffing and Building Data

Northampton School Committee held public hearing on FY27 budget with testimony focused on technology spending and staffing adequacy. The Committee heard more than a dozen speakers, including teachers and parents, who opposed a proposed $1 million investment in expanding the one-to-one Chromebook program and called for restoration of cut support positions, particularly interventionists and special education staff. Mayor Gina-Louise Sciarra reported that the strong budget would require $6.2 million in reserve transfers for FY27 and leave an estimated $7.7 million deficit in FY28.
In response to concerns about budget consistency, Member Anat Weisenfreund moved and the Committee voted five to three, with one abstention, to require Superintendent Bonner to provide accurate and clearly explained staffing and building profile numbers before further deliberation; a level services budget would require $564,000 in reductions, according to Business Administrator Jones.
