Northampton Reparations Study Commission revises endorsement language for state bill. The commission tabled until February a motion to urge the City Council to formally support House Bill 1753, pending legislation establishing a Massachusetts statewide reparations commission, following concern raised by Renika Montgomery-Tamakloe that the bill's requirement for "diverse backgrounds" does not guarantee sufficient Black representation. Montgomery-Tamakloe will draft revised language recommending the state body be majority Black.
The commission also agreed to compile reports from Boston, Amherst, and other municipalities on reparations recommendations, assigned newer members to lead that research, and discussed potential funding for youth commission Juneteenth initiatives. Solicitor Alan Seewald is scheduled to address open meeting law and related governance questions at the February meeting.
