Northampton Finance Committee Adjourns After Member Walkout Kills Quorum
Northampton Finance Committee meeting ends in walkout and adjournment with no business conducted.
NORTHAMPTON -- June 10, 2026, Northampton Finance Committee meeting ends in walkout and adjournment with no business conducted. The committee, meeting June 10 with three of four members present after Councilor Mayuri's absence, had convened to hear competing proposals for auditing services, including an in-person presentation from Tom Scanlan of Scanlan's auditing firm. Before Scanlan could speak, Councilor Robbins raised an objection to the process, arguing that committee chair Councilor Clemmer had solicited detailed bids from auditing firms without prior committee authorization and that proceeding "could possibly violate both state and ethics law." Clemmer argued any council member may contact vendors for information and that the meeting was for discussion only; Councilor Davis read from a clerk's memo noting that CPA contracts are exempt from MGL Chapter 30B procurement requirements and that the process is "at the discretion of the City Council." After the exchange failed to resolve, Robbins departed the meeting, dropping the body below its quorum threshold and forcing Clemmer to adjourn, leaving the city's auditing services evaluation in limbo.
