Northampton City Council Elects Maiore President, Klemer Vice President

Northampton Council elects leadership amid significant membership turnover. Rachel Maiore was unanimously elected City Council President for 2026-2027, while Deborah Klemer won a contested vice presidency 6-3 over Garrick Perry, the council's second-most senior councilor. Maiore, in her seventh year and a former Finance Committee chair, emphasized collaboration and courage in addressing housing, safety and schools challenges.
The council unanimously adopted procedural rules and meeting schedules. City Solicitor Attorney Seewald cautioned councilors that a quorum of five must deliberate only in public and that four councilors cannot communicate about pending matters to any fifth member.
