Committee reviews Chamber's downtown construction aid plan

Other Committee · Meeting of September 22, 2026

Northampton committee reviews $235,000 downtown marketing push ahead of Main Street rebuild. The City Council's Community Resources Committee heard from former Councilor Jim Nash, now chair of the Greater Northampton Chamber of Commerce's POP campaign, on efforts to protect downtown businesses during the MassDOT-funded Picture Main Street reconstruction. The committee approved two sets of prior meeting minutes, 4-0.

The digital marketing campaign, funded by $150,000 in casino mitigation grants, $75,000 in repurposed ARPA funds and $10,000 from the chamber, is meant to run through the end of 2027. Mayor's office aide Alan Wolf said Eversource is paying "100 percent" of costs tied to a utility delay a downtown property owner said cost the project a year. Committee member Kevin McAllister pushed back on rumors the whole city would be torn up for years, calling that "a lot of disinformation."
