NORTHAMPTON — City Council opens FY2027 budget hearing amid school funding debate. The Northampton City Council opened its public hearing on FY2027 budgets May 27 with presentations from the Information Technology Services Department, Health and Human Services Department requesting $1,531,675, and Northampton Public Schools. Superintendent Portia S.
Bonner presented a School Committee-approved operating budget of $56,317,261. The council heard significant public testimony about a gap between the mayor's city targeted budget meeting Level Services of $46,599,217 and the schools' Strong budget request of $50,372,969. The hearing continued to June 2, 2026.
