City Council approves $290,317 school appropriation amid budget dispute

Northampton City Council approves $290,317 midyear school appropriation. The Council voted 8:1 to approve the appropriation despite the School Committee voting 9:0 on January 22 (with Mayor Sciarra abstaining) for $790,175. Mayor Gina-Louise Sciarra reduced the request, citing $123,000 in state circuit-breaker reimbursement and $91,050 in capital items to be moved to the Capital Improvement Plan, contending actual support totaled $504,367.
Superintendent Dr. Sandra Bonner had compiled a $586,992 list of school-identified needs. Councilor Christopher Stratton opposed the appropriation, arguing it was insufficient and that the process had improperly excluded proper School Committee deliberation.
