City Council advances housing exemption for duplex development
City Council · Meeting of April 16, 2026
Northampton City Council advances two-family housing exemption from site plan review. The measure, referred to the Planning Board and Legislative Matters, removes regulatory barriers for duplex projects exceeding 2,500 square feet while maintaining other zoning requirements including setbacks, frontage and design criteria. Planning staff will continue code-compliance reviews.
In other action, councilors unanimously amended a community-safety resolution on immigration enforcement to add U.S. Representative Jim McGovern and Southampton Valley Agricultural High School Superintendent Andrew Linkenhoker as recipients. The council also referred a snow-removal ordinance to the Transportation and Parking Committee for continued discussion after a difficult winter.
